Environmental Report FY2025 edition

Introduction

Since obtaining integrated ISO certification covering both quality and environment in August 2008, NSS has continued a wide range of activities — improving work quality, maintaining regulatory compliance, reducing environmental load, and beautifying the local environment. FY2025 results reached 117% of the previous year's sales, an exceptional increase rarely seen in recent years. The strong performance the industry has enjoyed since the latter half of last year has carried into the current period, and we remain busy today.

Looking at last fiscal year's environmental metrics on a per-sales basis, we achieved our best-ever results across every category. Naturally the trend differs by item, and we will continue to examine the underlying factors. As in past years, we compare emissions and consumption across environmental categories and report on the activities we have carried out. We invite you to review our progress against the FY2025 environmental targets.

  • Electricity

Electricity usage rose alongside higher production, but the increase was only around 5%, and on a per-sales basis it improved (declined) substantially. Although most of our work involves small-lot items, across the full year and the whole company, overall production efficiency appears to have risen considerably.

  • Coolant waste

Generation itself decreased, and combined with higher sales this produced a strong result. While the prior year saw a temporary rise in disposal due to an equipment layout change, taking into account results from earlier years and the growth in equipment count over several years, efficiency is steadily improving.

  • Waste oil

The annual total was flat, unchanged from the previous year.

  • Sludge

Reduced significantly again, following on from the prior year. Beyond the scale benefits of higher production, we believe one factor is that the various consumables and the equipment used in production are themselves becoming cleaner year by year.

In addition, since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, awareness of reducing waste of consumables has grown across the whole company, especially in the purchasing department.

Electricity consumption has not risen as fast as the rate of production growth, and waste volumes are level with or below the previous year — pointing to a considerable improvement in production efficiency. We believe one driver is the DX (digital transformation) effort we have focused on over the past several years. This company-wide DX is still very much in progress, with major themes set for each department. As these are addressed, we expect efficiency to improve further and to contribute greatly to reducing our environmental load.

Environmental activities

We value our connections with the local community and continue community-contribution activities led by our employees. This fiscal year, our long-running local beautification activities were recognised with an award from the city. We are deeply honoured that the local cleanup and environmental beautification work we have carried on over the years has been acknowledged.

This year we also placed emphasis on maintaining and beautifying the environment in which our employees work, carrying out weeding of the company's green spaces. In September and March we plan cleanup activities centred on the sidewalks and public spaces around the plant, continuing our commitment to preserving the local environment. We will keep advancing our beautification activities while cherishing our gratitude to the community.

As a way to deepen exchange with the community, we actively welcome plant tours for local organisations and junior-high and high-school students. While showing visitors our actual manufacturing floors and equipment, we provide an opportunity to learn about the appeal of monozukuri, our technology, and the people who work here. These tours deepen our community ties and contribute to nurturing the next generation of talent. As a company open to the community, we will continue such activities.

We also conduct plant tours for our customers and business partners, offering opportunities to introduce our production equipment and technical capabilities. Over the past year, the number of companies wishing to tour our operations specifically with regard to our DX has increased.

We are sincerely grateful to everyone who has visited us.

These activities also connect to the realisation of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals). Through preserving the local environment and providing learning opportunities for the next generation, we contribute to the achievement of "Quality Education", "Sustainable Cities and Communities", and "Responsible Consumption and Production".

NSS Co., Ltd. will continue to value relationships of trust with the local community and to work steadily toward the realisation of a sustainable society.

To those who follow our environmental management

We recognise that the results of our environmental stewardship are not for us alone to evaluate. Setting goals, drafting implementation plans, executing them, and assessing the outcomes are essential corporate activities — but the people who can truly evaluate the results are our customers and other stakeholders.

Beyond improving the quality of business and organisational management, we will continue to channel energy into environmental stewardship as one facet of management. As we ask each year, please do not hesitate to share any comments, opinions, or requests with our staff.
